There are many people who will argue that eating a creamy cheesecake or indulging in a decadent chocolate pudding helps lift their mood.

The Institute of Optimum Nutrition would argue the former, claiming that there a number of foods that improve mood levels by releasing natural, feel-good chemicals called endorphins. According to research produced by the Institute, a number of foods found in desserts – fruits, nuts and chocolate – contain high levels of endorphins, minerals and antioxidants that can help banish the blues.
Chocolate – Long heralded as a quick pick me-up, chocolate contains N-acyclethanoloamine – a chemical group that stimulates the brain to release endorphins. According to scientists at the Neuro-sciences Institute in California, consumption of chocolate can ‘heighten sensitivity and produce euphoria’. Chocolate also contains high quantities of phenols, which are mood-boosting antioxidants.
Strawberries – Strawberries are a rich source of vitamin C, which helps the production of endorphins and aids in the absorption of iron. The fruit is also a good source of potassium, which helps generate nerve impulses and heightens sensitivity.
Ice cream – Ice cream contains a number of positive properties that are found in the milk it is made from, including calcium, protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, and vitamin B12. Alongside promoting good health, these elements help to elevate the mood.
Nuts – Nuts contain high amounts of selenium, a mineral which has been shown to positively influence people’s mood. They are also rich in vitamin B, protein and unsaturated fats.
