Afternoon Tea isn’t exclusively for the afternoon

As a nation, we consume over 60 billion cups of tea each year. One of our favourite ways to enjoy a cuppa is with the delightful accompaniment of finger sandwiches and mini cakes, or as it is best known, Afternoon Tea.

This British tradition stems from a ‘sinking feeling’ that Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, had in the 1840s. At the time, it was usual for people to enjoy two meals a day – breakfast when they first woke up and dinner at around 8 o’clock before bed. To fight these hunger pangs she was experiencing, the Duchess began enjoying a pot of tea and a light snack in the middle of the afternoon. This private indulgence soon became a more sociable activity as the Duchess invited friends over for tea and a walk in the afternoon. Other social hostesses soon adopted these habits and so sprung Afternoon Tea as we know it.
